A few weekends ago, I had the chance to make the trip to Vancouver Island alongside Cole and Dylan, for a bit of a reunion.
Our goal? To bring Reid, the man behind Rudeboy Custom, face-to-face again with his old demo car, the brown 7MGE swapped Butame X3. While it now belongs to Ben from Garage Tanoshi, who’s been contemplating letting it go, this was likely our only chance to see these two back together. Reid made the drive in his latest project, a striking Butaketsu C130 Datsun Laurel — the two cars together almost seemed destined for this moment.
The island weather leaned toward the moody side, with a mix of clouds and fog that added even more personality to the day, though it stayed dry enough for us to explore. We spent the day roaming around picturesque spots that delivered stellar views and even had time to share food and stories with friends. Adam from the Moistboys was kind enough to show us his collection of rare trinkets, a neat lineup that could keep any enthusiast intrigued for hours.
Adding to the mix, Carson joined us, bringing along his classic Nissan Sunny pickup, which he’d imported straight from Japan. It fit in perfectly with the day’s eclectic showcase of Japanese classics. Josh was also along for the adventure, adding to the vibe of friends, vintage rides, and appreciation for these unique machines and the people who pour themselves into them.
The blend of retro Japanese cars, stories amongst friends, and the island’s dramatic landscapes created the kind of weekend we can’t get enough of.
